The web is evolving from a global information space for storing individual documents into a highly diverse information network in which pieces of data interlink and work synergistically together to create meaning. Speakers will introduce the Semantic Web and the basics of linked data. Particular attention on library linked data will include a review of the state of the art and some practical experience in linking library data to the greater linked data cloud.

Target Audience: Librarians, developers of web applications, information architects, and others interested in the basic concept of the semantic web, linked data and how libraries can take a leadership role in creating linked data solutions.

An unconference is a participant-guided experience that harnesses the unstructured conversations people usually have between conference sessions into the conference itself. Unlike most conferences where talking heads and group leaders decide what is important, unconferences are organized by the crowd. Unconferences are about sharing the knowledge and passion we have for our profession and taking what we learn into the world to make a difference. Everyone has something to share. Everyone has something to learn. We can all change the world.

This preconference will provide a thorough introduction to the Drupal content management system. Presenter will guide attendees as they create Drupal sites in a sandbox environment, covering the basics of content creation, themes, modules, and user management. Demonstrations of innovative Drupal sites, including library sites, library intranets, and an electronic journal will be provided. Previous web experience is helpful, but not required. Participants should plan to bring a laptop.

The Internet Resources and Services IG will discuss exciting current technology trends. At this meeting, the group will review past programs and plan future activities. We will prepare, for one of LITA’s big events, the seventh annual Ultimate Debate titled “Cloud Computing: Liberation or Big Brother.” Join us and become a member of LITA’s Internet Resources and Services IG. This will be the inaugural meeting of the reconstituted Vendor/Library Interest Group. The purpose of the meeting will be to finalize the name and charge of the interest group as well as a substantive discussion of the key issues in play between the vendor and library community related to technology, and to plan activities for the Annual Conference.

Join library panelists as they share current and planned efficiency savings achieved with OCLC Web-scale Management Services by replacing rote tasks with higher-value, higher-priority projects. This session will be led by an OCLC workflow consultant who has been on-site at these implementing libraries to assess the impact of Web Scale services on cataloging, discovery and delivery.

Meeting of STS Hot Topics Discussion Group

A forum and group discussion on the Edge Initiative, a national effort to introduce benchmarks for high quality public access technology in libraries.

What do we mean when we talk about ‘emerging technology’ and being a ‘technology catalyst’ in libraries? How is emerging technology integrated effectively into library operations and services via residency programs?
The SJSU SLIS and its grant partners are conducting a planning grant to explore a new residency model for recent MLIS graduates, focused on integrating emerging technology into libraries. We will share our findings and insights to date, and then open it up to participants to solicit their experiences, thoughts and best practices. If you’re interested in emerging technology in libraries and residency programs, we encourage you to attend!
