All Sessions

Consecutive panel discussions will address two hot topics and take questions from the audience. The first panel from 8:00 - 9:00 a.m. will examine the current state of orphaned works. Panelists will discuss how institutions are "unlocking" orphans, best practices developed in doing so and possible paths forward.

The second panel from 9:00 - 10:00 a.m. will review the landscape of digital libraries including the HaithiTrust Digital Library, Internet Archive and the proposed Digital Public Library of America. Panelists will discuss how the models work, ways in which they differ and how each digital library is approaching orphaned works.

"Library of Congress Decisions for Copy Cataloging with RDA," Presented by Barbara B. Tillett, Chief Policy & Standards Divison, Library of Congress:

What's a cataloger to do if headings or the entire bibliographic record is coded as RDA? This presentation will review LC decisions for its own staff,and share information about the documentation and training materials that are available on LC's Web page relevant to copy cataloging with RDA.

"CIP Metadata for E-books"

Karl Debus-López, Chief of the U.S. General Division and Acting Chief of the U.S. and Publisher Liaison Division at the Library of Congress, will present information on the Library of Congress’ new pilot project to create cataloging in publication metadata for electronic books that are simultaneously published with their print equivalents. The rationale for providing pre-publication metadata for electronic books will be discussed, as will the scope of the pilot and the process created by the Library of Congress to create the metadata. Library of Congress created CIP e-book pre-publication data for the pilot participants is currently available in OCLC for use by libraries and vendors as a source of copy cataloging.

Discussion of issues related to Germanic studies and Romance languages collection development and user services, especially e-books and e-resources

Now hear the behind the scenes story from Jo Budler, Kansas State Librarian. Learn about the publishers’ reaction to her claim and what this daring effort might mean for state and public libraries across the country. Learn why Budler took the path she did and how you can learn from her experience to improve what you can do in your own library.

This will be the first face-to-face meeting of the new Working Group on Digital Content and Libraries, appointed by ALA President Molly Raphael in fall 2011.

JSTOR has spearheaded new efforts in support of its not-for-profit mission to extend access to the content on the platform, including Books at JSTOR, the Current Scholarship Program (CSP), and releasing the Early Journal Content freely to the world. This session will cover JSTOR’s vision for integrating books on to the JSTOR platform and how CSP addresses user needs and can increase library’s goals for information delivery and access. Additionally, we will discuss how JSTOR helps institutions leverage their investments in broadening access to local content and providing access options to unaffiliated scholars through the Register and Read program.

The committee will be doing in-depth planning for our 2012 annual program currently titled "The E-book Elephant in the Room: How to figure out what’s relevant and working for your patrons to help you make effective decisions for your e-collection of the future."

This is a newly formed interest group open to anyone with an interest in collection development and electronic resources. We will discuss topics of interest to the group and pursue projects that we determine are needed in this area. Please join us for our inaugural meeting and bring your ideas and enthusiasm. Everyone is welcome!
