An unconference is a participant-guided experience that harnesses the unstructured conversations people usually have between conference sessions into the conference itself. Unlike most conferences where talking heads and group leaders decide what is important, unconferences are organized by the crowd. Unconferences are about sharing the knowledge and passion we have for our profession and taking what we learn into the world to make a difference. Everyone has something to share. Everyone has something to learn. We can all change the world.

Perpetual Access: Peaks and Pitfalls

We know that we want to have perpetual access clauses in our licenses and we know that publishers will provide them, but what are we actually getting with our perpetual access rights? In this informal group setting, we will discuss the results of our examination of perpetual access clauses from 20 of the Texas A&M University Libraries’ licenses for our major journal packages, including the impact on our electronic resources and serials workflows; the potential impact on the acquisitions and cataloging staff; and how perpetual access affects our current and/or future functions as technical services librarians. We will present a chart comparing the perpetual access rights offered by the 20 publishers and we will then open the discussion to the audience to learn how librarians at other institutions deal with perpetual access.

Dallas Public Library is rethinking everything as it transitions out of the Great Recession of 2008. Mobile technology allows staff to deliver service at point of contact; an innovation incubator provides opportunities for assistance to those wanting to start a micro-business; and a renewed commitment to library services in a digital age has staff focused on the customer’s experience.

Join library panelists as they share current and planned efficiency savings achieved with OCLC Web-scale Management Services by replacing rote tasks with higher-value, higher-priority projects. This session will be led by an OCLC workflow consultant who has been on-site at these implementing libraries to assess the impact of Web Scale services on cataloging, discovery and delivery.

Meeting of the PARS Digital Conversion Interest Group to present topics on interest. Preservation professionals are increasingly charged with varied and complex collections that include a growing amount of moving image material. Furthermore, limited resources and technical learning curves contribute to the challenge of preserving these materials.

This session will provide practical information on the preservation of moving image materials. A panel comprised of experienced professionals will address such topics as standards and technical specifications, file formats, codecs and wrappers, metadata, data storage, and delivery for access. The session will provide equal parts theory and application, with an eye to what small to mid-sized institutions can do to implement these strategies.

This will be an opportunity to learn more about general technical matters surrounding these complex challenges, as well as an opportunity to bring specific questions and success stories to what will be a mostly “town hall” style meeting.

Time will additionally be allotted at the end of the program for discussion of the Annual Meeting’s agenda.

What do we mean when we talk about ‘emerging technology’ and being a ‘technology catalyst’ in libraries? How is emerging technology integrated effectively into library operations and services via residency programs?
The SJSU SLIS and its grant partners are conducting a planning grant to explore a new residency model for recent MLIS graduates, focused on integrating emerging technology into libraries. We will share our findings and insights to date, and then open it up to participants to solicit their experiences, thoughts and best practices. If you’re interested in emerging technology in libraries and residency programs, we encourage you to attend!

Centralize e-resource management with Web-scale services from OCLC. A new License Manager works with the WorldCat knowledge base to consolidate discovery, fulfillment and management of your licensed resources. The knowledge base also streamlines sharing of articles and e-books, enables full link resolution in WorldCat Local and integrates with Web-scale acquisitions to consolidate all parts of e-resource management for the first time.

Join Courtney Greene, Head of Digital User Experience (DUX) at Indiana University Bloomington Libraries, to talk about what happens when user experience meets virtual reference. Courtney will share how she & her team have worked to balance the advantages of centralized management of VR services with the importance of staying closely connected to librarians in the field, on the ground and at the desk. She will also discuss how the mobile redesign increased access to research apps and how users have responded to the changes. After Courtney's presentation we will discuss other emerging technologies for virtual reference.
