An unconference is a participant-guided experience that harnesses the unstructured conversations people usually have between conference sessions into the conference itself. Unlike most conferences where talking heads and group leaders decide what is important, unconferences are organized by the crowd. Unconferences are about sharing the knowledge and passion we have for our profession and taking what we learn into the world to make a difference. Everyone has something to share. Everyone has something to learn. We can all change the world.

Effective Succession Planning and Strategies to Identify and Prepare New Managers for Cataloging and Metadata Departments

The need to plan for succession planning in an environment that is losing its cataloging and metadata department leaders challenges libraries of all types and sizes. Guest presenter April Grey will present an overview of her experiences coming into the University of Louisiana at Lafayette as the Head of Cataloging with minimal library experience, heading a department where 80 percent of the staff have more than 20 years’ experience. She will discuss the successes, challenges and the plan for changes in the future.

Members will discuss the current state of increasing vacancies for cataloging and metadata department managers and explore the requirements, experience, and challenges of this emerging trend.

This forum offers an opportunity for academic librarians to learn more about the new Standards for Libraries in Higher Education approved by the ACRL Board and released October 2011. Learn how these standards differ from previous standards and learn about the services ACRL will offer to support librarians in applying the standards for the purposes of strategic planning, program review, and institutional effectiveness.

This new committee's charge is: To help public libraries use technology to improve services; to consider the impacts and opportunities presented by technology; to collect and disseminate information on technology innovation which might be applied in public library operations; to provide channels of communication for sharing among public librarians about technology; and to work with PLA Board and staff toward achieving PLA strategic planning goals as they relate to the use and impact of technology in public library services.
