In addition to covering basic skills for effective genealogy reference services, this workshop will feature expert speakers on local and specialized resources that help answer the more challenging research questions. Librarians from public, academic and all other types of libraries interested in learning how to use genealogy-related resources more effectively will benefit from this session. Speakers include Lloyd Brockstruck, who will address collection development during hard economic times; Sue Kaufman, who will focus on the Clayton collection of early Spanish documentation; and a third presenter, who will discuss Native American records. Lunch is sponsored by ProQuest.

An unconference is a participant-guided experience that harnesses the unstructured conversations people usually have between conference sessions into the conference itself. Unlike most conferences where talking heads and group leaders decide what is important, unconferences are organized by the crowd. Unconferences are about sharing the knowledge and passion we have for our profession and taking what we learn into the world to make a difference. Everyone has something to share. Everyone has something to learn. We can all change the world.

This preconference will provide a thorough introduction to the Drupal content management system. Presenter will guide attendees as they create Drupal sites in a sandbox environment, covering the basics of content creation, themes, modules, and user management. Demonstrations of innovative Drupal sites, including library sites, library intranets, and an electronic journal will be provided. Previous web experience is helpful, but not required. Participants should plan to bring a laptop.

The Chapter Leaders Forum, presented by the ALA Chapter Relations Committee at each ALA Midwinter and Annual, provides a great opportunity for Chapter Leaders (especially incoming leaders) to meet and discuss a full agenda on topics to help prepare them to lead an association. Topics have included Membership Development and Retention, New Revenue Ideas, Social Media, and Advocacy. This event requires advance registration and includes lunch. No on-site registration.

The Enhance Sharing Session is a forum for Q&A and for the exchange of information concerning OCLC's Enhance program and Expert Community.

There is more to Functional Requirements than just FRBR. Come join us to learn more about FRAD and the other FR models from our very knowledgeable presenters, Qiang Jin and Dr. Shawne Miksa.
Qiang Jin is Senior Coordinating Cataloger and NACO Coordinator, Associate Professor of Library Administration at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Library. Her presentation will provide a basic explanation of the Functional Requirements for Authority Data (FRAD): A Conceptual Model. It will illustrate the Conceptual Model for Authority Data with specific examples, and explain the FRAD entities, attributes of those entities and relationships between those entities with many specific examples so that attendees will be able to understand the FRAD model. It will include some brief RDA authority records exemplifying the major FRAD relationships.
Dr. Shawne Miksa is an Associate Professor in the Department of Library and Information Sciences and Acting Associate Director of the Interdisciplinary Information Science PhD Program in the College of Information (COI), University of North Texas. In her presentation, Dr. Miska will list and define the 12 user tasks from all three FR Models (FRBR, FRAD, FRSAD) and present her conception of corresponding tasks that an information organizer (cataloger, metadata specialist, etc.) performs to support the user tasks. Most of these tasks are not new to the practice, and Dr. Miska will show how they can be re-cast to correspond with the functionality models.

Open to all! Join your OCLC member colleagues for a fast-paced, informative afternoon. We'll start with a light lunch at noon. After a brief welcome from ARC Chair William Maes, you'll hear a dynamic keynote presentation from author and TechCrunch Senior Editor Sarah Lacy, who will speak on "Mining the Fault Lines: Big Collaboration on a Richter Web Scale," with Q&A to follow. William Maes will also give a membership update, followed by roundtable discussions. Then, OCLC senior managers will share membership survey results and present on the Cost Sharing Models Task Force’s recommendations. The afternoon concludes with a social reception with the OCLC Board of Trustees, OCLC senior managers and Americas Regional Council Ambassadors.

This important meeting focuses on the need for an up-to-date educational preparation of catalogers and other metadata specialists, so that the educational system will continue to produce professional librarians whose skill sets match the needs of the marketplace that they will be entering.

Joint meeting of COL and Leg Assembly

YALSA revealed its new Research Agenda in October, with four priority areas: 1) Impact of Libraries on YAs, 2) YAs and Reading, 3) Information Seeking Behaviors and Needs of YAs and 4) Informal and Formal Learning Environments and YAs. Join in on this discussion to explore what directions research might take in the next few years and how you might participate. Facilitated by members of YALSA’s Research Committee.

Experienced ERPs who have participated in two or more on-site visits are invited to attend training for ERP Chairs. The session will prepare attendees to lead an external review of MLIS programs seeking ALA accreditation. The session will include a panel discussion featuring experienced ERP Chairs and Office for Accreditation staff.
