The meeting will be a broad discussion on technology themes and trends with the purpose of defining some key topics that we will work into our program at ALA Annual.

The LITA Next Generation Catalog Interest Group invites representatives from major next generation catalog system vendors, including Ex Libris, eXtensible Catalog Organization, OCLC, and Serials Solutions. Each representative will demonstrate distinctive features of their system and will join in a panel discussion on topics, such as challenges of developing next generation catalog systems, embracing non-MARC metadata, and taking advantage of linked data.

Participants are encouraged to ask any question related to next generation catalog systems. A brief business meeting of the Next Generation Catalog Interest Group will be following.

Facebook allows you to plug user-created or commercial apps into your online experience with a single, simple click. Amazon uses analytics to make recommendations about what you might enjoy reading. So why not use some of the same technologies to increase library effectiveness? In this session, Kathryn Harnish, OCLC’s product manager for the platform, describes several approaches that OCLC is taking to enable libraries—and their partners—to customize workflows, enhance the user experience and increase overall effectiveness.

What do we mean when we talk about ‘emerging technology’ and being a ‘technology catalyst’ in libraries? How is emerging technology integrated effectively into library operations and services via residency programs?
The SJSU SLIS and its grant partners are conducting a planning grant to explore a new residency model for recent MLIS graduates, focused on integrating emerging technology into libraries. We will share our findings and insights to date, and then open it up to participants to solicit their experiences, thoughts and best practices. If you’re interested in emerging technology in libraries and residency programs, we encourage you to attend!
